Q: Can you briefly tell us about your background and what inspired you to pursue product design?
As a product designer and a guitarist, I often hear fellow musicians discussing how to streamline their gear or make carrying effects pedals more convenient during rehearsals and various performances. While enjoying the fun of playing, everyone seems to be troubled by the need to carry heavy equipment. These frustrations have driven us to think about designing a pedal that is extremely lightweight, convenient for practicing on the go or in a lounge, capable of producing effects that suit various music styles, and allows for easier sharing and exchanging of tones with other users online, as well as upgrading and enhancing the product. We first launched the Prime P1, which was well-received by many users who continually provided us with feedback and suggestions for improvement. As a result, we have used new hardware platforms and algorithm technology to introduce the Prime P2, which boasts even more powerful tonal capabilities.
Q: Could you describe any challenges you faced while working on your winning project?
Extreme portability means that the size of the product has always been a primary focus for us. We imposed almost stringent requirements on our engineers regarding how to effectively utilize the internal space. Fortunately, after continuous discussions and attempts, we finally achieved a relatively satisfactory result, although there are still some minor regrets. For instance, to achieve dual-channel stereo output, we have to use an adapter cable. There is a very representative viewpoint in Eastern philosophy: “The moon waxes only to wane, and water fills only to overflow.” This means that excessively pursuing perfection can lead to the opposite result, as imperfection is the true state of the world.
Q: What, in your opinion, are the most important factors in creating great art work?
Passion, rationality, and trust. Passion drives us to do this, rationality helps us clearly understand what we need to do, and trust enables better teamwork and collaboration.
Q: What do you find to be the most challenging aspect of product design?
Creative inspiration can instantly make tedious work interesting, but finding inspiration is a challenge.
Q: What motivates and drives your work?
A significant reason is the love for the product. Additionally, the feedback we receive from users after they have seriously used the product, whether it’s expressions of love or criticism, always becomes the motivation for my work.
Q: What’s next for you in your career as a product designer?
Keep pursuing what we love and continue to launch more products that can bring joy to everyone.
