Teeter Pot
A plant vessel with a playful twist, the Teeter
pot isboth a housing for small flora and a
compelling kenetic artifact. Through playing
with the teeter pot, rocking it back and forth,
and exploring its faceted geometry, the viewer
is invited to observe more closely the details of
their tiny plant. Plants in the home are
understood almost exclusively as pure
decoration, meant to sit idle and provide visual
relief. But flora is much more than background
décor. Each plant is a complex living system
reacting to the environment around it. The
teeter pot was an experiment to explore how a
plant’s vessel could excite the viewer and
prompt them to investigate its contents. In
order to achieve this, the teeter pot process
aimed to create a vessel that would draw the
viewer’s attention to the aspects of plants that
are often overlooked. One concept sought to
show the subtlety of a plant’s growth over
time. This manifested itself as a rounded base
that allowed the vessel to slowly tip as the
plant grew larger. Ultimately the offsetting of
the planter’s angle sparked such interest in
viewers that it soon became the primary
feature of the design Seemingly on the verge of
toppling over, the teeter pot creates a visual
tension that immediately draws the eye of the
viewer. Its feat of balance plays to the viewer’s
natural curiosity.Through playing with the
teeter pot, rocking it back and forth, and
exploring its faceted geometry, the viewer is
invited to observe more closely the details of
their tiny plant. This play serves as a reminder
of the plant’s presence and beauty.
