We started this project by researching a
product concept currently being tested by Ikea
called the Flexible Wall. Our initial goal was to
create a service around this product. We went
through a very iterative design process of
research, analysis, design, testing and
revisions. Following our research, we
discovered that many of the service
opportunities identified had already been
accounted for by Ikea, however, they were just
poorly marketed, or they stemmed from the
design of the product itself, which was
something we were not focusing on. This
forced us to pivot in our design process. We
took a step back to reexamine Ikea’s goal in
designing the Flexible Wall, along with their
entire product lines, which revolves heavily
around sustainability. The lead us to the
sharing and circular economies. This pivot and
new focus on sustainability lead us to our final
service concept.
